Phylissa Mitchell is director of inclusion, equity, and diversity for University of Virginia (UVA) Library, charged with creating programs to attract populations underrepresented in librarianship to the profession and to UVA. She’s responsible for inclusion and equity outreach across libraries and the University, regionally and nationally.

A recovered academician, Mitchell taught journalism skills, critical race theory, and First Amendment law at Washington and Lee University and W&L School of Law, West Virginia University, UVA, and the University of Richmond. Mitchell was a Fulbright Scholar (Law), Ukraine, 2008-2010, based at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and taught throughout Ukraine and post-Soviet Eastern Europe. Prior to teaching, Mitchell produced news for KCTS-TV (Seattle), NBC News (Charlotte, N.C.) and ABC and CBS News (New York, N.Y.).
