Being Gay is Not What You Think: Reframing our Understanding of Gay Male Cultural Values

90-minute Workshops

Day 3

Session Code: S6-C
When: April 12, 2018
Location/Room: 101 G
Level: Introductory
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenter: Dr. Joel Brown, Global Inclusion Partners LLC

Description

The answer to the question, “What does it mean to be gay?” is not an obvious one. Apart from discussions around behavior, identity formation, and epidemiology, this question has significant importance as gay people become more visible globally. With increased visibility comes the need to define and describe the cultural experience of gay people in a more nuanced and articulate way than has been done previously. While other cultural groups enjoy relatively greater cachet when it comes to understanding their cultural norms and values, gayness—when not stereotyped—remains a mystery. As a result, this workshop seeks to reframe and illuminate gay cultural norms and values from an ethnic perspective, and highlight the reason why gay people are indispensable to business growth and innovation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • To deconstruct how prevailing D&I ideas negate gay people and make it more difficult to build inclusion.
  • To provide a more balanced and nuanced understanding of gay culture.
  • To reframe how gay issues are handled within D&I.
  • To provide businesses with a framework for building more successful D&I initiatives that include gay people.
