Flying Your Freak Flag—The Authenticity Advantage

60-minute Stretch Workshops

Day 2

Session Code: S1-E
When: April 11, 2018
Location/Room: 101 F
Level: Intermediate
Track: Leadership Development
Presenter: joe gerstandt, joe gerstandt

Description

Inclusion is about inviting, leveraging, and rewarding whole and authentic contributions. Authenticity has taken on buzzword status and we toss the word around very casually as if it were a simple, safe, common thing. Properly understood, authenticity is hard work and not terribly common, especially at work. We do a lot to simply fit in. This session examines some of the common barriers to authenticity and shares four sets of practices (awareness, accountability, adventure, advocacy) toward greater authenticity.

This session is highly interactive, and occasionally life-changing. There will be some laughter, there will probably be some tears, and there will most definitely be poetry. On a very fundamental level, inclusion is about creating spaces and places where people who are naturally different from each other can tell the truth to each other. Our first truth must be about who we really are.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Attendees will have a working definition of authenticity and know some of the common organizational barriers to being authentic at work.
  • Attendees will work through four sets of practices (each with their own tools and exercises) to pursue greater authenticity.
  • Attendees will be inspired and informed to be more authentic at work and also to help their organization embrace and benefit from more authenticity.
