Demystifying Artificial Intelligence: How AI Exacerbates Bias

90-minute Workshops

Day 2

Session Code: S2-A
When: April 17, 2019
Location/Room: M 100 CD
Level: Introductory
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenter: Matthew Taylor, Independent Contractor

Description

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming a larger part of our economy, our workplaces, and even our everyday lives. While new tools enhanced by AI have the capacity to build smarter technologies, they also have and continue to perpetuate and exacerbate the implicit biases that our society has. This workshop will show participants some of the ways in which bias is introduced into AI systems when inclusion is not centered in AI-enabled tools.

Participants will engage in hands-on, experiential activities that show how some of the most basic and pervasive AI algorithms work without needing to know how to code. From there, participants will connect what we’ve learned about how AI works to its social impacts, both now and in the future.

Learning Outcomes
  1. Leave with a basic understanding of how some commonly used AI algorithms work
  2. Draw connections between AI algorithms at a low level, and their larger social impacts
  3. Have a better sense of pressure points and the interaction between AI equity and inclusion
