Mindless clicks no more! Bridging the gap between digital and in-person experiences to build workplace inclusion

20-minute Spotlight Sessions

Day 2

Session Code: Spotlight
When: April 17, 2019
Level: Introductory
Track: Innovation & Transformation
Presenter: Dr. Michael Baran, Iris Inclusion

Description

Companies these days feel compelled to include some digital component to their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy. They recognize the benefits of being able to scale a training or activity to large numbers of people quickly and cost-effectively. However, these digital solutions often replace in-person experiences rather than complementing them. If we are going to truly increase workplace inclusion, we need solutions that bridge the gap between the digital and in-person experiences. In this session, Dr. Michael Baran, will describe a system that bridges the gap. He will describe the “Yellow Card System” designed to increase recognition of microaggressions and facilitate conversations following when a microaggression has occurred. The system is complemented by a digital “practice” where employees practice recognizing, understanding, and reacting to different microaggression scenarios on their own, in order to improve their performance in-person when it really matters.
