Beyond Skin Deep | Using Film to Activate Workplace Change

20-minute Trend Talk

Day 4

Session Code: TT-7A
When: March 11, 2021
Level: Intermediate
Track: Social Responsibility
Presenter: Elena Valentine, Skill Scout

Description

Film director Ava Duvernay recently shared that arts and activism are nearly one in the same. It’s through art and story that social change can change the narrative. Changing the narrative has the power to change how people see and behave toward each other including behavior in our workplaces. The thing is, we don’t leverage this medium enough.

Sometimes the hardest conversations we need to have about race, inclusion, and happenings inside our workplace are made easier by grounding these hard conversations in story. One of the most powerful mediums for stories is film. Films can open doors to take our colleagues from talk to meaningful collective action.

In this trend talk, Elena will share a short documentary film, about a diversity recruiter from St. Paul, to engage attendees in story and enable reflections of their own work. This film will be available along with a guide that attendees can use to spark discussion among their own colleagues after the event.
