Hot Mamas: The Upward Trend of Affirming Parents

20-minute Trend Talk

Day 3

Session Code: TT-4A
When: March 10, 2021
Level: Introductory
Track: Social Responsibility
Presenter: Rev. Dawn Bennett, The Table

Description

They say it takes a village to raise a child. True, and it takes more than a village to raise an LGBTQ+ child. You may have heard about an upward trend of parents, mostly mothers, who have become public voices of advocacy and support for their gay children. Why is this? Because for rainbow families, socially toxic environments exist at home and in the workplace. These “hot mamas” are on fire to keep their children safe and provide a protective barrier around their own households, their jobs, and the health and well-being of their circles of reach.

While you may think you know what it’s like for rainbow families (parents with LGBTQ+ kids), this session will pull back the curtain to show you what it’s really like. The cost is higher than you think, it’s higher than statistics reveal, and workplace leaders have an opportunity to change the landscape from inside their walls. This trend talk is intended to leave you concerned, with the hope you will be spurred into local advocacy.

Learning Outcomes

• Improved understanding of the social harms of religion-based bigotry, homophobia and transphobia
• Tips and advice to address phobic and harmful speech about LGBTQ+ issues
• Empowered sense of self when advocating for marginalized people groups
