75-minute Workshops

Day 3

Session Code: S5-C
When: March 10, 2021
Level: Introductory
Track: DEI Strategy
Presenters: Marisa Gelfusa, Independent Consultant  |  Silvana Valentone, Independent Consultant

Description

Diversity is a fact in today’s workplace; it is “the mix.” But striving for equity and inclusion, “making the mix work,” requires intentional development and application of equitable performance management processes. How can applying the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, evidence-based principles from neuroscience, support equity and inclusion in the workplace?

We will explore how diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices and UDL connect to help us intentionally design performance management processes that remove barriers to engagement and performance. These include practices around staff recruitment, learning and development, and performance assessment. What can we learn from the UDL framework about engaging individuals and teams that are inclusive and that foster greater self-efficacy?

This introductory workshop will provide participants with strategies and concrete tools to include this new perspective in their workplace practices, as well as offer opportunities to share their experiences and ideas.

Learning Outcomes

• Describe DEI and UDL definitions and how they intersect in the workplace
• Apply UDL strategies to create inclusive performance management processes
• Make the business case for applying UDL in the workplace, as an ally or part of DEI strategy
