The Role of White-Bodied Leaders in DEI

90-minute Workshops

Day 2

Session Code: S4-F
When: April 6, 2022
Level: Intermediate
Track: Government
Presenters: Jennifer Billig, Align Consulting  |  Maria Sarabia, Ramsey County

Description

Data shows that most high-level positions in organizations are still held by white-bodied people. Further, most organizations operate from dominant-culture values that fail to create a welcoming environment for many Black and Brown employees. White-bodied leaders have a unique role to play in transforming these organizations. This session will examine practices and norms that create barriers to more inclusive workplaces while also introducing new practices and techniques that create better outcomes for Black and Brown employees and reduce turnover and conflict.

Our attention will be focused on new ways of thinking and developing skills and behaviors that harness the brilliance of lived experiences. We aim to equip leaders to better accept diverse perspectives, stay in a learning mode and include underrepresented voices at decision-making tables to re-imagine processes, renovate systems and transform power.

Learning Outcomes

• Gain understanding of new frameworks for dominant-culture leadership to grow equity and inclusion
• Preview skills required for more inclusive leadership
• Identify resources for leadership development and operationalization of equity and inclusion
