How to Mitigate Diversity Resistance in Your Organization

90-minute Workshops

Day 3

Session Code: S7-C
When: March 29, 2023
Level: Advanced
Track: DEI Strategy
Presenter: Michael Carter, IC Edge
Prerequisite: Knowledge of the benefits of DEIB and core concepts of organizational change; basic understanding of culture, identity, unconscious bias, power, and privilege; experience initiating and rolling out a diversity initiative or program

Description

This session will help the diversity practitioner to understand what diversity resistance is, identify when it appears in the workplace, and equip themselves with strategies to mitigate it. You will learn that diversity resistance must be understood on three levels — its root causes, how it manifests, and the harm it instigates — in order to alleviate it.

Additionally, you will learn how to anticipate diversity resistance in all its forms so you can be prepared to address it before it deters your efforts. In transforming your organization’s culture to higher levels of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, it’s imperative to know one of the most significant causes of failure in DEI work is diversity resistance so you can be prepared to combat it.

Learning Outcomes:

• Gain a clear understanding of diversity resistance, why it exists, and the harm it can do
• Develop a deep understanding of diversity resistance’s root causes, manifestations, and mitigation strategies
• Learn how to build a mitigation strategy specific to your organization
