Millennials, Nones, and New Religious Movements: The Changing Landscape
60-minute Workshop
Day 2
Session Code: S3-BWhen: March 28, 2023
Level: Introductory
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenter: Wendy Goldberg, Tri-Faith Initiative
Description
Millennials and Generation Z professionals are becoming less interested in their grandmother’s version of religion, motivating new and changing needs for religious inclusion and accommodation in the workplace. What is changing, and how do we adapt to a world where religious identities are more diverse and fluid than ever before?
Whether it’s participating in multiple religious identities, little-known religious identities, or avoiding religious identity altogether, the way professionals relate to religion affects their everyday lives — and isn’t left at the door of the office. Welcoming people requires welcoming that which makes them feel complete.
This session will address changes in the landscape of religion and generational divides through survey data, personal narrative, and examples, and conclude with guidance for opportunities to implement practical policy and procedure to be more inclusive of these shifts.
Learning Outcomes:
• Explore generational trends with religious affiliation in the United States
• Learn about “none” and small-religion culture among millennials and Gen Z
• Recognize new religion-adjacent needs that millennials and Gen Zers are seeking in the workplace
