Day 2
Session Code: S4-DWhen: March 28, 2023
Level: Introductory
Track: Diversity Leadership
Presenters: Riikka Salonen, BCT Partners | Brad Fortier, Uplift Oregon
Description
During this interactive workshop, participants will explore how to be a more inclusive person who supports and uplifts others. This workshop is well suited for managers, consultants, coaches, or anyone who wants to improve their interactions with others with an eye toward mindful inclusion.
The participants will be introduced to a Wheel of Power and Privilege for the USA. Additionally, participants will receive 8 additional wheels addressing power and privilege issues around the globe. During the session, learners will identify their social identity positionalities that impact their abilities to decide, define, influence, or change outcomes at the workplace. As a group, participants will explore the social identities that give them the most power, unique perspectives, and affect their sense of belonging at the workplace.
In this workshop, participants will work together to identify behaviors that support inclusive culture and build a sense of belonging at the workplace. Participants will share stories of being seen, connected, and supported to evoke behaviors that create a sense of belonging. Drawing from a palette of micro-affirmations, participants will practice affirming behaviors during a role play where they design a micro-learning about inclusive behaviors. Applied improvisation-based exercises of this workshop are intentionally selected based on their capacity to release hormones, particularly oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, into the learners’ brains.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify social identities that enhance their ability to influence outcomes at the workplace
- Reflect on the behaviors by others that make one feel seen, connected or supported
- Develop experiential microlearning while practicing use of microaffirmations
