Description

The Science of Exclusion focuses on how our brain responds to physical and social injuries. According to Dr. John Cacioppo: “Our survival depends on our collective abilities, not on our individual mind. We are connected across our lifespan to one another, through a myriad of invisible forces that, like gravity, are ubiquitous and powerful.”

There are four basic human needs threatened by exclusion: the need to belong, sense of control, meaningful existence, and self-esteem. The Science of Exclusion analyzes the three essential questions: Why didn’t others help? When did others help? How can we change this bias?

Research has shown that individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when they are perceived as different. This is what we call “bystander effect” or “bystander apathy.” Sometimes, just seeing other people doing something kind or helpful makes us more willing to help others. Staying alert and attuned to your situation, rather than relying purely on the responses of those around you, can help you best decide how to react.

The Science of Exclusion centers on developing a strong culture of health, safety, and well-being across your workforce, and encourages employee commitment to taking action to ensure a safe workplace for all.

Learning Outcomes:

• Describe and differentiate brain responses to physical and social injuries
• Identify and explain “diversity tension,” the feeling of pressure we experience when faced with a situation which challenges us in some way
• Examine individual actions for intentional and unintentional exclusion
