We Can Address Subtle Acts of Exclusion Together — and Get Closer Because of It!
60-minute Workshop
Day 2
Session Code: VS-7When: March 28, 2023
Level: Intermediate
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenter: Dr. Michael Baran, Iris Inclusion
Description
Research shows that subtle acts of exclusion (microaggressions) continue to happen to people of marginalized identities at extremely high rates — threatening inclusion, causing lack of job satisfaction, impacting mental and physical health, and decreasing organization performance.
For too long, workplaces have provided avenues for filing formal harassment or discrimination claims without providing any guidance for those more subtle acts of exclusion (SAE) that need to be addressed, but not in the same way.
In this session, your presenter will provide a deep understanding of those subtle acts of exclusion as well as a framework and practice for addressing these SAE together. When we are able to collectively get on the same page with this endeavor, we can build trust, psychological safety, authentic connections, and a culture of true inclusion for all.
Learning Outcomes:
• Build deeper understanding for what subtle acts of exclusion really are, why they are such a big deal, and how they work to exclude people
• Learn a framework for collectively having productive conversations about subtle acts of exclusion when they happen to you or your colleagues
• Generate strategies for collectively addressing subtle acts of exclusion at your own organization, for employees of all levels
