Recent research on our global database of employee opinion suggests that an inclusive and diverse environment contributes to an organizational culture that ultimately, through enhanced views of leadership and engagement, is associated with better financial outcomes. Specifically, employees who are more favorable about inclusion and diversity in their organizations tend to view their leaders as more interested in employee well-being, more likely to operate with integrity, more respectful of employees and more clearly guided by company values when making decisions. These aspects of leadership are in turn strongly correlated with high employee engagement, an outcome that is itself correlated with performance. Furthermore, our research indicates that in practice, leaders can drive employee engagement by building inclusive workplaces hallmarked by equal opportunity, open dialogue, and cohesive working relationships.
