Description

A challenge for anyone in the D&I field is to make sure that we are doing the work on ourselves, and preparing ourselves to work effectively with whatever groups, cultures, and situations present themselves. Many “global” D&I initiatives are based on a U.S.- or U.K.-centric paradigm, sometimes to a depth that is unacknowledged; many D&I practitioners, engaged in helping others understand the limits of their perspective, struggle to understand the limits of our own perspective—we don’t know our blind spots and wonder whether there is a way to approach D&I that works across all cultures and sectors. Especially if we are U.S.-based, we may not understand the impact of our implicit cultural paradigms on others and on our ability to work effectively. Is there a formula, a strategy, that works wherever we are?

U.S.-born, Australian-based Duncan Smith believes there is, and will facilitate a session based around five “foundations of diversity” that are critical to include in any D&I intervention. We ignore the basics at our peril. Strong foundations are essential both for newcomers to the field to learn, and for experienced practitioners to revisit with fresh eyes. From Peoria to Papua, New Guinea, this is an approach that works.
