Day 1Session Code: SEM-J
Time: April 10, 2018 2:00 pm
Track: Social Responsibility
Presenters: Elizabeth Williams-Riley , American Conference on Diversity | Bari L. Katz , American Conference on Diversity | Gloria D. McDonald , American Conference on Diversity
Recently, we’ve seen movements gain momentum around issues of race, class, and gender in the United States. Struggle in these areas, deeply rooted in historical oppression, has left educators, social service providers, and diversity officers seeking training on how to have brave and courageous conversations about social justice and equity that move the needle in their own schools, communities, and businesses.
This seminar is based on the Common Ground Institute, developed to provide a retreat space for professionals across sectors to explore intersectionality of social justice issues and how diversity, equity, and inclusion play out. Participants connect with others’ lived experiences, working toward justice and equity to share best practices, brainstorm new ideas, and build community. Highly interactive, this seminar will provide an overview and experience of our Common Ground Institute as a model for building knowledge, confidence, and skills to more effectively do this work.
- Experience reimagining workplace diversity and inclusion and its intersection with social justice.
- Practice redefining professionalism through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens.
- Using tools for finding common ground in the midst of conflicting ideals, competing realities, and lived experiences.
