Engage & Activate: Film-Based DEI Training that Enhances Your Workplace Culture
90-minute Workshops
Day 2
Session Code: AW2-AWhen: April 6, 2022
Level: Introductory
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenter: Geraud Blanks, Milwaukee Film
Description
Milwaukee is among the most segregated cities in the country, home to the zip code (53206) that incarcerates the highest percentage of Black men in America. Inspired by such challenges plaguing his local community and informed by years of work in social service, Milwaukee Film’s chief innovation officer, Geraud Blanks, created the Engage & Activate (EA) program in 2020 to support the DEI work of community organizations and corporations.
Characterized by active listening and reflective thinking, the EA program’s film-based vicarious learning model facilitates personal discovery through the lived experiences of film subjects. Vicarious learning activities are intrinsically social and require participants to engage intellectually, creatively, and emotionally together, making the learning task more authentic.
Explore for yourself the effective power of film to engage your workforce and activate learning opportunities that create a more empathetic and equitable workplace environment.
Learning Outcomes
• Understand how film-based cultural education promotes vicarious and experiential learning
• Develop a plan to incorporate film into your equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies
• Learn how to get buy-in from your team around film programming as a DEI strategy
