Embodied Leadership: A Multidisciplinary Whole Person Approach to Workplace Connectivity
60-minute Stretch Workshops
Day 3
Session Code: S5-HWhen: April 12, 2018
Location/Room: 101 DE
Level: Intermediate
Track: Innovation & Transformation
Presenters: Lois Cooper, LMH Strategies, Inc. | Marilyn McLaughlin, All Bodies Move!
Description
A physical movement of our bodies accompanies every word we speak. These movements can be large and obvious or extremely subtle, but no less significant. Very often, these movements are “heard” more than the spoken word. Equally as often, our feelings and attitudes can be felt even when no words are spoken at all! Conflicts and unspoken tensions arise. This makes it hard for leaders to motivate their teams for optimal collaboration, innovation, and productivity. How can leaders reduce conflicts and improve communication with their teams? How can leaders grow beyond current models to increase engagement?
Embodied Leadership is an innovative multidisciplinary approach to moving beyond differences based on race, gender, and culture, to name a few. The common ground is our bodies—everyone has one! We help participants create greater self-awareness of how they are relating to others and help them learn how to more effectively use a variety of creative approaches to understanding and communication, as tools for leadership. What are our movements telling others about us? How can we be more approachable as leaders for our team members? Based on well-researched global approaches to equity and inclusion, and informed by the work of leaders in the fields of Movement Analysis, Body Connectivity, and Interactive Group Music and Secular Mindfulness, we will explore simple yet powerful tools for helping leaders to facilitate authentic connections that celebrate difference and foster better relationships in the workplace.
Learning Outcomes:
- Attendees will take back an innovative and multidisciplinary approach to build bridges and improve connections across all cultures in their workplaces.
- Attendees will learn new ways to engage all levels of their workforces around equity and inclusion, from individual contributors, middle managers, and senior leaders.
- Attendees will practice a powerful tool for breaking down barriers of separation that are instrumental to fostering better relationships in the workplace.
